Deriving from the coats namesake town in the province of Antwerp in Belgium, the Duffle coat was typically constructed from a coarse, thick woollen material. The initial influence of what later would become the duffle coat we are familiar with today probably came from the Polish military Frock Coat, developed in the early part of the 19th century.
Towards the latter part of the 19th century the Duffle coat was adopted by the British Admiralty who chose a number of different manufacturers to produce the coat for the Royal Navy in England. They later adopted the style ever so slightly and developed it fully during WWII, notably worn by Field Marshal Montgomery which led to the nickname "The Monty Coat". Due to large surplus stuck post WWII, the duffle made its way into modern day society and became a popular item for the youth and student movements.
Buzz Rickson's have faithfully reproduced this iconic coat from a heavy duty 34 oz melton wool with a blend of 90% wool and 10% nylon. All details in original coats are present with the three toggle front and hood with adjustable snap buttons.
