Tailor Toyo Velveteen Suka Jacket Polar Bear x Alaska Map Black x GreenTailor Toyo
The roots of the Souvenir Jacket, or Sukajan in Japanese, can be traced back to American soldiers stationed in the Pacific following the end of World War II. During the post-war occupation, American troops began using traditional Japanese designs and hand-stitching them into the backs of their jackets to commemorate their time in Japan Popular designs included Japanese (and Chinese) style dragons, cherry blossoms and trees Some would also opt for artwork that could have ranged from local maps to Geisha girls. These pieces would often use rayon and silk
Drawing from the post-war American presence in Japan the Sukajan jacket of the '40s through '60s has been beautifully reproduced by one of the best out there.
The body of the garment is cut from a unique acetate rayon, original to Tailor Toyo. Their choice and design of fabric are aimed at producing the most aesthetically vintage-looking piece possible. Taken from their vast archive in Japan, Tailor Toyo are able to successfully create a garment steeped in post-WW2 history with a truly authentic, vintage feel.
The 'Alaska Pattern', and specifically the polar bear with the lightning bolt is one of the rarest and most sought after vintage designs. Tailor Toyo have adapted this style and added custom style ribbed hem and sleeves (original examples were usually just white) while the custom rayon embroidery dog sledge on the sleeves is custom to this interpretation from Toyo. The reverse showcases the Alaska Map and features the key locations and also important motifs of Alaska.
