Warehouse & Co have been producing authentic, high quality garments since 1995. Warehouse continue with their standard aesthetic and development of iconic, classic pieces that have served them so well for 30 years.

This spacious, pullover smock faithfully reproduces the iconic USN Anti-Gas Parka, famously known as the Gunner Smock. Originally developed by the U.S. Navy during World War II, the garment was part of a protective outfit designed specifically for use in conjunction with Navy Series gas masks. Early examples of these were cut from a lightweight denim and featured a button front design.

These smocks were built as a functional tool for chemical decontamination and protection. Designed for single-use, the smock utilised cloth tie closures instead of metal hardware to reduce weight and simplify disposal after exposure. The hood, though visually oversized in proportion to the body, features a small, circular opening. This is a deliberate design to seal securely around a gas mask and prevent the ingress of hazardous particles.

As naval workwear, the garment was constructed with a generously oversized silhouette, allowing for freedom of movement essential to physically demanding tasks. To further shield wearers during decontamination procedures, the sleeves were elongated, minimising exposure and risk of radiation contact. Adjustable cloth drawstrings at the face, wrists, and hem provided a customisable seal for enhanced protection.

Original examples can be found in this classic Natural colour-way, though due to their single-use nature, these are not plentiful. After World War II, surplus USN smocks found new life beyond their original military purpose. These durable pullovers became popular among students, who adopted them for everyday campus wear due to their practicality, unique design & price! Some of the surplus garments were dyed in varying colours, both to refresh their appearance and to conceal residual stains or wear from prior use. This unintentional customisation contributed to their appeal.
