The A-1 flight jacket revolutionised not just flight clothing, but the production of jackets in general. This new style of 'windcheater which was lightweight, cut to the waist and used knitted components, influenced not only its immediate successor the A-2 but most sports jackets from its first development in the 1920s.

Most A-1's were made from capeskin, a soft lightweight sheepskin leather ideal for use as it was windproof and comfortable, though it proved to be impractical for the rough conditions of combat. There were very few A-1's made from horsehide, though surviving examples have an almost mythological status.

This jacket is made using Buzz Rickson's 'Bronco' horsehide a veg (wood bark) tanned, hand painted aniline-dyed Italian horse-hide which has a superb depth of colour and variation of tones, which will age individually and uniquely.
