Shady Character - James Dean Eyewear
Born in 1970's New York, Shady Character was the brainchild of the owners of an antique store in Manhattan, 'The Ruby Slippers'. The owners had a fascination with eyewear and were often handling deadstock 'Arnel' & 'FDR' Tart Optical frames from the late 40's - 50's, and eventually managed to persuade Tart Optical to make them their own frames, handmade in New York to their specifications.
Back in the day Julius Tart kindly provided Shady Character with their 'Arnel' frame, which they adopted and named 'Arnie'. For this boxset, they have recreated the James Dean Collection, made famous by the legal battle by the JD Foundation in the 80's - any leftover frames from this original collection were re-labelled Rebel, making them some of the rarest frames from that era.
Shady Character has been revived in Japan by the guys behind Julius Tart Optical, recreating the iconic frames using inherited archival material as design reference. We have two highly collectible box sets from Shady Character available, limited to 300 globally, built to the highest standard in Japan.
This boxset is available in two colours and are handmade in Japan using Takiron Cellulose acetate and Titanium 16K Gold plated components as well as Shima Optics Sun lenses for the clip-ons. Available in size '46-24', this boxset commemorates these highly collectible vintage frames and come with a bundle of great collectors items.
