Clinch by Brass Tokyo: Cultivate Chukka Release

As you make your way down the main road, you can’t miss the Brass Tokyo Repair shop - their building is completely covered in eye-catching vintage style branding. When you approach from the street, a charming wooden-clad storefront welcomes you. Inside, you’ll find vintage lighting and dried flowers creating a cosy, inviting atmosphere. Then, you’ll lay your eyes on their collection of hand-crafted shoes and boots. While the wait for a pair might be a bit long, visiting this unique gem is worth it if you want to truly appreciate the brand even further. Nowhere does retail like Japan.

On one of our recent trips to Japan, we were fortunate enough to spend time with the team at Clinch, who welcomed us into their workshop, bootmaking facilities, and retail space. It was during this visit that we were first introduced to the Cultivate Chukka, a project inspired by an original pair of CC41 British Utility Boots owned by London-based vintage dealer and collector, 19UJ Militaria.

Mr. Matsuura guided us through the development of the boot, presenting the original vintage pair and explaining the thinking behind the project. From the overall silhouette and pattern work to the finer points of construction and component selection, every detail had been carefully studied and considered. Seeing the original boots alongside the Clinch interpretation offered a fascinating insight into the brand's approach—one that combines a deep respect for historical footwear with an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity.

The Clinch Cultivate Chukka finds its origins in a rare pair of original CC41 British Utility Boots from 1941, owned by London-based vintage dealer and collector 19UJ Militaria. Carefully studied for their proportions, construction, and understated durability, these wartime boots provided the foundation for the design.

The Cultivate Chukka reinterprets the practical elegance that defined British utility footwear, preserving the character of the original while adapting it through Clinch's renowned approach to bootmaking. From its distinctive silhouette to its thoughtfully considered structural details, every element reflects the purposeful simplicity and craftsmanship associated with the CC41 standard -a wartime initiative established to ensure well-made, resource-conscious products without compromising quality.

The above images document the journey from inspiration to execution. Beginning with the original 1941 CC41 British Utility Boots owned by 19UJ Militaria, they highlight the distinctive details, proportions, and construction techniques that served as the foundation for the project. Despite decades of wear, the vintage pair retains the purposeful simplicity and functional design that made wartime utility footwear so enduring.

We then move into the Clinch workshop, where Mr. Matsuura can be seen translating those original characteristics into the first sample pair. From pattern development and leather selection to lasting and assembly, each stage reflects the meticulous process of interpreting a historical design through the lens of modern craftsmanship. Rather than producing a direct replica, the goal was to preserve the spirit and character of the original boots while refining them with the precision, materials, and construction standards for which Clinch is renowned.

Built on Clinch's HR-Standard last, initially introduced by Clinch for their Cowboy Boot. The Cultivate Chukka features a structured toe that provides a clean, balanced silhouette while maintaining a comfortable fit. They have a beautifully sculpted shape, arguably the most distinctive and desired detail of this hand-carved wooden last created by Clinch. The fit is snug, contouring to the foot, with the intent of the leather moulding to the shape of your foot over time.

Crafted from Tea Core Emboss Crown Calf, the leather has a distinctive depth and texture from day one, while promising to develop a unique patina through years of wear. As the finish gradually reveals the rich undertones beneath, each pair will acquire its own character, reflecting the journey of its owner.

Particularly impressive are the small details that reveal Clinch's obsession with craftsmanship. From the carefully shaped heel and precise stitching to the considered proportions of the quarters and eyelets, every component has been selected and executed with purpose. These are details that may go unnoticed at first glance but contribute significantly to the overall balance and longevity of the boot.

The boots also feature a block heel, using a reproduction 'O'Sullivan's' Heel Block (O'Sullivan's was an American manufacturer of heels and patented this style in 1899) and tonal stitching throughout.

Projects like the Cultivate Chukka are a reminder of what makes Clinch so highly regarded amongst footwear enthusiasts. Rather than drawing inspiration from historical designs at a distance, the brand's approach begins with the careful study of original garments and footwear, seeking to understand not only how they were made, but why they were made that way in the first place.

The original CC41 utility boots provided the perfect foundation for such a project. Designed during a period of material rationing and wartime necessity, they embody a uniquely British approach to utility and functionality - one where simplicity and quality existed side by side. Through the Cultivate Chukka, that spirit has been preserved and reinterpreted for a modern audience.

Having had the opportunity to see the original boots alongside the development process in Japan, it was fascinating to witness the level of consideration that went into every aspect of the design.
