Summer Styling & Fabrics
denim jackets for summer
There aren’t many constants in life, or fashion; though denim is definitely one. What was once a youthful symbol of anti-establishment rebellion, has been universally accepted into every culture, subculture, generation and wardrobe for better or for worse.
Whether a statement piece or everyday staple, denim jackets can either excel an outfit or appear like an afterthought, tacked on at the end for lack of inspiration.
To avoid the latter, we have put together a selection of some superior offerings from a few of the best Japanese manufacturers; each with their own unique detailing and virtues, to offer a collection of denim jackets you’ll find yourself reaching for, not out of complacency, but as you would an old friend – for a cheeky pint and bomb about town.
Warehouse & Co. never disappoint with their attention to detail and choice of fabrics, over the past few seasons they have also been offering some exceptional washes for their ‘used’ and ‘second-hand’ series painstakingly replicating the fading of decades of wear to produce a very fine jacket which exudes lived-in cool: think Martin Sheen in Badlands.
From an ‘indigo’-dyed in the wool favourite, to a revived classic: the safari jacket has received a definite resurgence over the past few seasons and a 'hot' item for 2019
When worn well it can sidestep the feel of a 70’s matinee TV villain or the less inspiring wardrobe choices of Roger Moore’s Bond, into a new menswear staple; having enough tailored elegance without the formality of a blazer, safari jackets can bridge the gap between military inspired street style with a sartorial aesthetic.
Soundman has produced in our eyes a very fine example. The 'Whitby' jacket draws inspiration from British military 'Bush' jackets of the 1950s and utilises a very breathable Panama cloth, the loose 'basket weave' allows for excellent ventilation.
If you hold it up to the light you can literally see through the weave, though this jacket is by no means delicate.
Paired back, the Whitby jacket has been refined from original patterns, doing away with the external belt which can feel fussy and awkward, having instead a built-in draw-cord waist to still give a fitted silhouette.
ORINGAL 9oz denim
Perfect for Sumer
In a market saturated with heavyweight denim; looms groaning under the ever-increasing ounces, we decided to buck the trend and commission a super lightweight 9oz denim from Burgus Plus: perfect for summer and incredibly comfortable to boot.
Designed as a companion piece to our ‘HBP-300wscc’ Pop-Over Western Shirt, the 770cc is a subtly altered silhouette from Burgus Plus’ regular 770 fit (see our white selvedge 770 here). Keeping with the ‘western’ theme of the mini collection we wanted a classic western style, with slightly higher rise and slim fit through the leg; evoking images of cowboys leaning on fences as the old painted Levi's adverts of the 1950s.
Super Lightweight 9oz Selvedge Denim
The most resounding feature of both the HBP-300wscc and 770cc is the superb 9oz selvedge denim woven in Japan using American & Australian cotton.
Tightly loomed to produce a super fine lightweight fabric, Burgus Plus has created an eye-catching and characterful denim with irregularities and speckled 'nep' flecked throughout which catches the eye.
