The US Navy Dungaree Jumper is one of the most significant US Navy designs and is one of the most collectible pieces of vintage military clothing. Adopted on June 11th, 1919, the original U.S. Navy blue denim work uniform featured a pullover smock jacket paired with waist-high dungarees. However, by 1922, field testing revealed the smock jacket’s impracticality for active duty. As a result, it was replaced with a more functional design: a button-front jacket featuring a distinctive shawl collar, marking a key evolution in early 20th-century naval workwear.
This faithful reproduction from Jelado is crafted in Japan using a specially developed 10.5 oz denim with a subtle grey weft, lending a unique depth to the fabric that will change and develop over time. As per the original, it features a classic shawl collar and a button-front closure with custom-developed USN buttons, painstakingly recreated to match the period. Two lower patch pockets and small ventilation eyelets at the hem complete the piece.
